The ATD Creating Leadership Development Programs program illuminates
the knowledge and skills, as defined by our research, that talent development
professionals must have to design and implement programs that develop a new
generation of leadership in their organizations. The course is aligned to the Career
& Leadership Development Capability of the Talent Development Capability Model™.
The concepts covered in the course are reflected in the Talent Development
(TDBoK™), the definitive resource for the talent development profession, covering
23 capability areas.
This program is ideal for participants with backgrounds in learning design who
have a business need to develop leaders and create effective leadership programs.
The program focuses on understanding and applying best practices in developing
a leadership development process, including designing learning experiences that
nurture new leaders. This program is not a leadership course in and of itself.
Participants will be introduced to the foundational concepts of leadership development programs (LDPs), including what they are and why they are essential for organizational success. The focus will be on the role LDPs play in cultivating future leaders and aligning with business objectives.
Detailed exploration of the ATD Leadership Development Model will help attendees understand a structured approach to designing and implementing leadership programs. Key components, including readiness assessment and leadership competencies, will be introduced.
This session will focus on identifying the organizational drivers that necessitate leadership development. Participants will engage in an organizational readiness audit to evaluate how prepared their company is to support a leadership program.
Attendees will learn to identify and articulate the key business drivers that should guide the design of a leadership development program. The session will explore how these drivers link to the organization's goals and how to ensure leadership initiatives support these objectives.
In this session, participants will explore the process of identifying and ranking essential leadership competencies. The focus will be on aligning these competencies with both organizational needs and employee roles at different levels (entry-level, mid-level, executive).
Participants will learn how to craft development plans that focus on nurturing leadership skills. This includes selecting appropriate learning methods (e.g., coaching, mentoring, on-the-job training) and structuring developmental experiences tailored to specific leadership roles.
This session will cover how to create learning opportunities for leadership development within the organization. Attendees will explore best practices for developing leadership events, workshops, and mentoring programs. Case studies will be discussed to illustrate effective approaches.
Participants will be introduced to various leadership assessment tools, including questionnaires, self-assessments, and 360-degree feedback. The focus will be on selecting the right tools to assess leadership competencies and tracking progress throughout the program.
Effective leadership development requires the support of senior leadership. This session will cover how to create a communication plan that engages key stakeholders, secures executive buy-in, and ensures alignment with organizational goals.
